Electric blankets at night cost half as much as turning on the central heating.

If you need to keep warm at night, you can save money by opting for an electric blanket instead of turning on a radiator.
Bedding company Sleepseeker says its research shows that using an electric blanket costs less than 50p per night for eight hours of sleep.
Another Yahoo study citing Energy Hotline claimed that using central heating for nine hours could cost £1.20 an hour. So choosing an electric blanket can save you money, although it depends on the number of people in your home and how many radiators you need to turn on to keep warm.
A spokesman for Sleepseeker said: “In order to calculate the cost of using an electric blanket, you need to know the cost per unit of electricity. According to the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority (Ofgem), after the recent increase in energy prices, as of October 2022, the cost of electricity per penny/kWh will be about 52 pence per month or £0.52.
“Electric blankets generate heat through wires in the fabric. Each blanket has a different wattage and the total cost will depend on the rating on the blanket label.
“For this example, we will use an approximate power of 100 watts, as this is most common for electric blankets. First, you need to convert to kW. 100 W is 0.1 kW (or 100 divided by 1000).
To save as much as possible, you can opt for an electric blanket with a timer that you can set to turn off after a certain amount of time. Some also have adjustable heat settings so you can turn the temperature up or down as needed, while larger blankets can come with dual controls so you can warm your feet or any part of your body.
Sleepseeker also recommends that you preheat the blanket rather than heat it to a high temperature to reduce energy consumption.
