Frying pan and children’s toys clog Yorkshire’s sewers

It took several hours to clear blockages in Bradford and Hull, along with other problems caused by the accumulation of tissues and hygiene products.
Miles Cameron of Yorkshire Water said customers should only flush “three Ps – piss, poop and paper”.
“Our team deals with sewer blockages caused by foreign objects every day. It is important that customers take the time to consider the possible consequences of unwanted objects, tools, building materials and other items falling into the sewer,” he said.
“In this case, these elements cause blockages in the network, restricting the flow of sewage, which can eventually lead to sewage recirculating and entering the property, entering roads and trails, or entering local waterways.”
Mr. Cameron described Hull as “a hotspot for blockages from wipes, indelibles and foreign matter in the drain.”
He also urged people to discuss with children what should not go down the drain after their wheelchair toy caused major blockages in Hull’s Boothferry area.
“It is clear that the toy was not lowered into the net, but could have been thrown into an open hatch during construction,” he said.
“We have found that children are very interested in being educated about sewerage and what happens to waste when they leave their homes, and we continue to provide schools in the area with educational programs about all of our businesses.”
