Frying Pan Shoals, North Carolina (WWAY) — The restoration of the frying pan tower has been going on for years, and now people may be able to get a closer look at it.
The Skovoroda Tower was built in the early 1960s to replace the US Coast Guard lighthouse that had stood on the Skovoroda Shoal for over 100 years to help sailors navigate the shallow waters. The headlight station is located 135 feet above the ocean, 32 miles off the coast of Southport.
“This place is about 80 by 80 feet, which doesn’t seem like much, but when you’re here on the heliport and there’s no one else there, it’s your ocean,” said Richard Neal.
The lighthouse was decommissioned in 2004 and Richard Neal bought the tower at auction in 2010 and then built the non-profit FPTower 501(c)3 in 2018 to begin rebuilding the structure.
“I don’t know what I know about the ocean. Look, I look at the sea like everyone else. I see the waves and go to the beach. Okay, it’s all right. I can’t see anything underwater,” Neil said. . “Come to the tower at 60, put down your camera and learn to scuba dive. I’m looking for… a whole world of fish… everything from the tiniest, youngest creatures to 9 foot old sand, tigers just hang out.”
Volunteers of all specialties visit the tower every week from Sunday to Friday, breathing new life into the building. Neil says that over the years he realized that he needed not only qualified welders and electricians, but also people willing to help.
“A young British woman around my daughter’s age looked at us and wanted to help. She said she wasn’t very good at cooking, she couldn’t solder, but she was very excited and wanted to help.” Neil Say. “She fixed things and we worked together. Very good relationship between father and daughter, even if she was not my daughter. Who is younger than me, this is my daughter, this is my son. if you try to solder? “So she took my guidance and did it better than me because her hands were more stable!”
It is obvious that the work of restoring the tower has attracted the attention of people all over the world. The tower’s Facebook page has over 320,000 followers. Neil usually posts several times a day about what’s happening at the tower, from restoration work to sharing stunning 360-degree views. The tower will soon be equipped with eight high-definition cameras to monitor the progress of the work.
“All the volunteers that come here, some of them help with donations, some of them we bring because we really really need some of their skills. Some of the people who made the cameras, we’ll have eight soon. Very good HD camera. available online, we had to figure out how to make it fun,” Neal said with a smile.
While a lot of work has been done, Neil said there is still a lot to be done. They are working to avoid rust so the tower can be used for boaters’ safety, a safe space for wildlife and education for years to come.
“We also want to get it to a place where marine researchers can use the ROV they just received and sink it to the bottom. It’s really cool. I can’t wait until we get it so the high schoolers can say, ‘Well, who’s there?’ driving!? You know? Just get to know the ocean,” Neal said.
