Cleaning and maintaining your toaster or oven is an important task in the kitchen that can be easily overlooked. But it’s imperative that you show these small TLC appliances regularly to keep them in good working order and, more importantly, keep your family and home safe.
Christine Brown, Head of Consumer Services at Revolution Cooking, offers some general tips for cleaning a toaster or oven, starting with safety: “To clean any toaster, unplug it and wait for the toaster to cool completely before removing food.”
• Turn off the power and wait until the toaster has completely cooled down. • The crumb tray should be emptied frequently to prevent food from accumulating, and improper cleaning of crumbs may cause a fire. • Do not attempt to remove food while the toaster or toaster is plugged in. • Do not connect electrical appliances to toasters as they may damage the heating elements and result in fire or electric shock. • Do not spray or splash the toaster or toaster with water and/or detergents.

A paste of baking soda and water will help gently remove stubborn deposits from oven parts, interior surfaces, and glass doors.
Regularly clearing debris from your toaster is an important part of keeping these small appliances working properly and reducing the chance of a fire. Follow the instructions below to clean your toaster regularly.
Place the toaster over a sink or trash can and gently shake and/or tap the side of the appliance to remove debris. If your toaster has a crumb tray, remove it and empty it. Use a pastry brush to remove crumbs adhering to the inside of the toaster, if the design of the toaster allows, clean the top and bottom of the appliance.
Wipe the outside of the toaster with a damp microfiber cloth to clean it. Pay special attention to levers and handles, on some models they can be removed with hot soapy water and washed by hand.
If food, splatter, or sticky material is stuck, dip a rag in a diluted dishwashing detergent solution for additional cleaning. Dobie Pad can also be used to safely clean the outside of heavily soiled toasters.
Wipe the outside of the device with a microfiber cloth. Dry the parts thoroughly, then put them back into the machine and reassemble the toaster.
Cleaning a toaster requires a few more steps than cleaning a regular toaster. Here’s how to keep these small appliances in good and safe working order.
Remove the tray and grill from the appliance. Wash them in hot soapy water or, if dishwasher safe, in the dishwasher. Baking trays and cooking grates with sticky food or buildup can be soaked for 30 minutes and overnight to make cleaning easier.
Place the toaster over a sink or trash can and gently shake and/or tap the side of the appliance to remove debris. If there is a hatch at the bottom of the oven, open it to get rid of debris. Use a pastry brush to remove any crumbs stuck to the inside of the oven; If the design of the oven allows, clean it from the front and bottom of the appliance.
Wipe the outside of the oven with a damp microfiber cloth to clean it. Pay special attention to levers and handles, on some models they can be removed with hot soapy water and washed by hand.
To remove sticky food from inside the oven, use a damp Dobie Pad to wipe off deposits; never use steel wool, abrasive sponges or scrapers inside the oven. A paste of baking soda and water can also be used to safely remove food stuck to it from inside the oven.
Use a damp sponge or Dobie Pad to spread the baking soda and water paste to remove baked goods and deposits from the glass oven door. Wipe off the paste with a clean, damp sponge, then wipe the door with a microfiber cloth.
Wipe the outside of the device with a microfiber cloth. Dry the individual parts thoroughly, then put them back into the appliance and reassemble the oven.
“Regularly emptying the crumb tray is important to eliminate crumbs that can build up and pose a safety hazard,” Brown said, “but it can be the hardest thing to remember.” toasters like the June Oven have the ability to let users know when it’s time to clear the device of crumbs. They are often also designed with ease of cleaning in mind.
Matt Van Horn, co-founder and CEO of June, a 12-in-1 tabletop oven manufacturer, recommends cleaning them monthly with a commercial oven cleaner.
Most ovens should not be cleaned with oven cleaners such as Easy-Off; consult the manufacturer’s instructions before cleaning your toaster or oven with any cleaner stronger than soap or baking soda.
