Scoop: Tovala will launch a new Steam + Air Fry smart oven this fall

Chicago-based smart oven and food delivery startup Tovala will launch a new oven this fall called the Tovala Steam + Air Fry Smart Oven.
Technically, the second generation Tovala oven, released in 2018, has built-in convection (which does the same as air frying). However, so far, the company has not promoted the capabilities of the deep fryer through promotions or specially designed deep fryer recipes.
But this looks like it will change soon. Tovala has sent out a beta version of the new model with more emphasis on air frying, according to an email sent to a select few beta testers. “Many chefs and engineers support this latest model,” the email says, which may hint at some exciting new recipes and features for users of Tovala’s new equipment. The latest generation of smart ovens will begin shipping to customers this fall, according to the email.
At the moment, it is unclear whether the company intends to reveal its third-generation smart oven. After Tovala sent the test blocks to backers, they later sent an email in which they called the block delivery a “fluke”. The company’s support team has told some Tovala customers that the new oven is the same as the old one, except that they will send “fryer baskets” for an additional fee.
Update: Tovala has responded to our request and confirmed that they will unlock the fryer functionality with a software update and a new accessory in the fryer basket. According to Toval, it will be the same model of oven, but after a software update and the introduction of an air fryer basket, the model will be renamed Tovala Steam + Air Fry Smart Oven. The company also confirmed that they are updating their cooking scanning feature and plan to optimize 100 cooking products with baskets.
